There's a Yellow Spot at the Back of Your Eye. It Runs on a 50-Cent Food
Two men in Miami worked out what that spot is made of. The answer was two plant pigments — and your body can't make either one.
You hold the menu a bit farther out these days. In a dim room, the small print swims. Road signs at night take one extra beat to sharpen up.
Most of that is just age, and you can live with it. But there's one change people over 50 truly dread, and it isn't blur. It's the day the middle of what you look at goes soft and gray while the edges stay sharp. Doctors call it macular degeneration. The disease takes faces, books, and the road.
So the drugstore built a whole shelf for it. Eye pills. Thirty dollars a month, every month, for the rest of your life. But right now, in the third week of August, the best food for that spot is sitting in a bin at the farm stand. It costs about fifty cents.

Two Men in Miami and a Jar of Yellow
In 1985, a pair of scientists at Florida International University set out to answer a small, old question. Richard Bone was a physicist. Working beside him, a chemist named John Landrum. Neither man was an eye doctor.
Doctors had known for a long time that there's a yellow spot at the back of the human eye. Latin named it well: macula lutea. Yellow spot. Yet no one had pinned down what the yellow was actually made of.
Bone and Landrum got human eyes from donors. They lifted the yellow out and ran it through their instruments. Back came two plant pigments: lutein and zeaxanthin — say that one zee-uh-ZAN-thin.
Both come from plants. Your body makes neither one. So the yellow in your eye got there on a fork, or it never got there at all.
Their paper ran in the journal Vision Research that year, under a modest name: "Preliminary identification of the human macular pigment." A quiet title for a fact that should change what you buy this week...
Your Eye Wears Sunglasses You Have to Eat
The yellow spot is about the size of a pencil eraser. It sits at the back of the eye, dead center. Whatever you look straight at lands right there — a face, a price tag, the line on the road.
So that patch does the hardest work in the eye. And it takes the most light while doing it.
Blue light is the rough part. It packs the most punch and does the most wear over the years. The yellow works as a filter: it soaks up blue light before that light reaches the cells that read fine print. Those two pigments also mop up the mess light leaves behind.
Think of it as a pair of shades your body builds inside the eye. Out of food. And the color runs thin with age.
Why Corn Guards the Very Middle
Now here's the part that puts an ear of corn on your plate.
The two pigments don't sit in the same place. Lutein spreads across the outer ring. Zeaxanthin packs into the dead center — the tiny pit where your sharpest sight lives. Work published in the journal Nutrients puts it at roughly 2.5 times more zeaxanthin than lutein at that exact point.
Which food hands you the most of it?
University of Florida food scientists: corn and corn products are the main source of zeaxanthin in the American diet. Not kale, not spinach — corn.
Greens still win on lutein, and by a mile. That's the outer ring, and it matters. You want both — the yellow food for the middle, the green food for the rest.
There's an old rule in the kitchen worth keeping: the color of a plant is not decoration, it's the point. Cooks have eaten by that rule for centuries with no lab to back them up. Bone and Landrum simply gave the yellow a name.
What Harvard Saw in 102,000 People
A team at Harvard put the whole idea to a long test. They tracked 63,443 women and 38,603 men, and they kept at it for two decades.
Every few years the group filled out what they ate. Doctors confirmed each new case of eye disease from medical records.
The people who ate the most lutein and zeaxanthin had about 40% less risk of advanced macular degeneration than the people who ate the least. That work ran in JAMA Ophthalmology in 2015.
Big numbers like that show a link, not a promise. So a fair question comes next. Can what you eat this month actually change the yellow in your eye? Or is the amount you have set for life?
The Study Where People Ate Corn for 15 Weeks
In 1997, a team led by Billy Hammond went looking for that answer. They measured the yellow in 13 people. Then they fed them spinach and corn — a serving of greens and a cup of kernels, day after day, for up to 15 weeks.
Eight of the group responded. Their blood levels climbed, and the yellow at the back of the eye climbed with them, by about 19% on average. Most of that gain showed up inside four weeks.
Two people ate only the corn. One of them ran his blood zeaxanthin up 70%, and his yellow spot gained 25%. The work was published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
Thirteen people is a small group, so hold it loosely. But that little study did the one thing the huge ones can't. It watched the color go back on...
Three Things Worth Knowing at the Farm Stand

Buy It Heavy. Then Butter It.
Pick ears that feel heavy for their size, with a snug green husk and a moist stem end. Corn starts turning its sugar to starch the hour it's picked, so cook it the day you buy it. And put fat on it — these pigments need fat to cross into your blood, so butter or olive oil earns its place here.

Winter Corn Still Counts
Fresh ears are a summer thing, and that's fine. Figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture give a cup of canned corn roughly 2,200 micrograms of the two pigments, against about 1,100 for a cup of frozen kernels, boiled. Both feed the spot. Choose a "no salt added" can, drain it, and warm it in a little butter.

Pair the Yellow With the Green
Corn covers the center of your sight. Leafy greens cover the ring around it. One cup of raw spinach carries around 3,700 micrograms, and frozen kale runs higher still. Egg yolks are worth a spot on the plate too, since the fat in a yolk helps carry the pigment along.
HERE'S WHAT I'D DO THIS WEEK
Eat corn four times. Cob, frozen, or canned — all three work. Butter or olive oil goes on every time.
Put something green beside it. Spinach, kale, or broccoli, most days of the week.
Ask before you buy an eye pill. The standard formula holds 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin, and it was built for people who already show damage. Let your eye doctor say whether you're one of them.
Book the dilated exam. No food on earth can spot this disease early. A doctor looking into a widened pupil can.
Bone and Landrum weren't trying to save anybody's sight. Two curious men in Miami simply wanted to know what a yellow smudge was made of. And the answer turned out to be supper.
None of this is a cure, and corn won't undo damage that's already there. Eye disease has many causes — years of sun, smoking, blood pressure, plain genes. Keep your appointments and keep taking what your doctor gives you.
Still, the yellow at the back of your eye is one of the few parts of your body you can hand something to today. It won't make itself. Every ear you eat tops it up a little.
Corn is cheap this week, and it will never taste better than it does right now. Buy six ears on the way home. Eat one tonight with butter, and keep it going until the season runs out.
